UPI Fraud: How to get money back and file complaint

UPI Fraud

UPI has changed the way of making payments in India. Whether we are paying a shopkeeper, sending money to a friend, paying an electricity bill or ordering food, the transaction can be completed in a matter of seconds.

However, this feature has also attracted fraudsters.

A fake call from customer care, a request for immediate payment, a suspicious QR code or a message saying “Your KYC will expire today” can be enough to trick someone into losing money. By the time the victim realizes what has happened, the payment has already been made.

If this happens to you, don't assume the money is gone forever. There is no guarantee that the money will be recovered, but acting quickly can greatly increase the chances of intercepting or locating the money.

This guide explains what to do after a UPI fraud, how to report it to your bank, how to file a cyber crime complaint and what options are available if your bank does not resolve the matter.

What is UPI fraud?

UPI fraud occurs when a person is defrauded or an unauthorized transaction occurs through a bank account linked to UPI.

Fraudsters use many methods. Someone can pretend to be a bank employee and ask for your UPI PIN. A fake buyer on an online marketplace may send a QR code and claim that by scanning it you will "receive" payment. Another scammer may send a 'collect request' asking for approval.

In some cases, victims are asked to download screen-sharing or remote-access applications. Once they have access to the phone, the fraudster can see what the person is doing and misuse financial information.

One basic rule can prevent many such scams: You don't have to enter your UPI PIN to receive money. UPI PIN authorizes payment from your account.

Can UPI payment be canceled?

Usually, no.

NPCI says that once a UPI payment is initiated, a 'stop-payment' request cannot be easily placed on it. However Start with the bank or relevant regulated entity and follow their complaint procedure.

If the bank rejects the complaint, gives an unsatisfactory reply, or does not respond within the stipulated time, the case may be eligible to be escalated under the Reserve Bank-Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026.

The current scheme came into effect on July 1, 2026, replacing the 2021 scheme. RBI says that when the conditions of the scheme are met, complaints can be lodged through its 'Complaint Management System'. This service is free. Under the 2026 framework, the complainant must first approach the relevant regulated entity (such as a bank or payment service provider). If no response is received within 30 days—or such longer time frame as prescribed by RBI, NPCI or applicable card-network rules—or the customer receives a response but is not satisfied with it, a genuine complaint can be taken to the RBI Ombudsman.

Keep your bank's original complaint safe as RBI may ask for complaint number, date, transaction details, bank's response and supporting documents.

Common UPI Scams You Should Recognize

UPI scams keep changing, but the idea behind them is often the same. Cheating creates haste or panic.

“Your bank account will be blocked today.”

“Your electricity connection will be disconnected in 30 minutes.”

“I sent you payment. Scan this QR code to receive it.”

“Your refund is pending. Enter your UPI PIN to receive the money.”

“You have won the prize. Pay the processing charge.”

Whenever someone creates panic and asks you to take a quick financial decision, stop and act thoughtfully.

Never share your UPI PIN, OTP or banking password. Do not install unknown apps on someone's advice. Verify customer-care numbers with the company's official app or website instead of relying on numbers found in random search results or social-media comments.

Can money lost in UPI fraud be recovered?

Sometimes yes, but there is no sure way to get the money back.

The chances of recovery depend on several factors, such as how quickly the fraud was reported, whether the recipient's account can be identified, whether the funds can still be blocked, how the transaction was authorized, and what evidence is available.

The worst thing to do is nothing, as the money has already left your account.

Report the transaction to your bank, call 1930, file a cybercrime complaint, and preserve all evidence. Even if you do not get the money back immediately, filing a complaint creates an official record and provides authorities with information that can help in detecting the fraud.

Final Thoughts

UPI was designed to make digital payments fast and easy. The real danger arises when a fraudster persuades someone to ignore basic payment-related precautions.

If you fall victim, never let embarrassment stop you from reporting the incident. Educated individuals, business owners, professionals, students, and senior citizens—anyone can fall prey to a scam that appears trustworthy.

The most important step after a fraud occurs is to act quickly.

Contact your bank immediately. Report the financial fraud on 1930. Register the case on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Keep your transaction records and messages safe. If the bank's grievance redressal process does not yield results, utilize the RBI Ombudsman facility where applicable.
