Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana

Details

The Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) is a flagship initiative launched by the Government of India to promote and facilitate financial support for micro and small enterprises. The primary aim of this scheme is to provide easy access to credit for income-generating activities, particularly in the non-farm sector. Under this scheme, eligible individuals and businesses can avail loans of up to Rs. 20 lakhs to support their operations in manufacturing, trading, or service sectors. The scope of PMMY also includes activities allied to agriculture, such as poultry, dairy, beekeeping, and similar ventures.

The scheme specifically targets micro and small entities, which encompass a wide array of proprietorships and partnerships. These include small manufacturing units, service sector units, shopkeepers, fruit and vegetable vendors, truck operators, food-service providers, repair shops, machine operators, artisans, food processors, and other similar businesses. By extending financial assistance to such enterprises, PMMY seeks to boost entrepreneurship and encourage the growth of small-scale economic activities across the country.

Loans under the PMMY are provided through eligible Member Lending Institutions (MLIs),

which include:

  • Public Sector Banks
  • Private Sector Banks
  • State-operated Cooperative Banks
  • Regional Rural Banks
  • Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs)
  • Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs)
  • Small Finance Banks (SFBs)
  • Other financial intermediaries approved by Mudra Ltd.

The interest rates applicable to these loans are determined by the respective lending institutions in accordance with the guidelines set by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). These rates may vary depending on the nature of the loan and the lending institution.

Regarding processing fees, banks have the discretion to levy an upfront fee based on their internal policies. However, most banks waive these charges for Shishu loans, which cover loans up to Rs. 50,000.

It is important to note that Mudra does not engage agents or middlemen for facilitating loans. Borrowers are strongly advised to remain cautious and avoid intermediaries claiming to act on behalf of Mudra or PMMY. All loan applications must be made directly through the approved Member Lending Institutions to ensure transparency and security.

In essence, Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana serves as a powerful instrument to empower micro and small entrepreneurs by providing them with the necessary financial support to grow their businesses, create employment opportunities, and contribute to the country’s economic development.

Benefits

  • Structured Loan Categories: The scheme is designed with four distinct categories—Shishu, Kishore, Tarun, and Tarun Plus—to reflect the growth stage, development needs, and funding requirements of micro units and entrepreneurs.
  • Shishu: This category supports the initial stages of entrepreneurship by providing loans up to Rs. 50,000. It is aimed at helping new and small businesses establish themselves.
  • Kishore: Designed for growing enterprises, Kishore offers loans above Rs. 50,000 and up to Rs. 5 lakhs, enabling businesses to expand operations and increase their capacity.
  • Tarun: For well-established micro units with higher funding needs, the Tarun category provides loans above Rs. 5 lakhs and up to Rs. 10 lakhs to support further growth and development.
  • Tarun Plus: This category is intended for entrepreneurs who have successfully repaid previous Tarun loans. It allows access to loans up to Rs. 20 lakhs, encouraging sustained growth and long-term business expansion.
  • Stage-Based Support: By classifying loans according to the growth stage of the enterprise, PMMY ensures that financial assistance is tailored to the specific needs of the entrepreneur, fostering gradual and sustainable development.
