Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme

Details

The Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme, launched by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India, is a flagship initiative designed to empower the youth with practical exposure and industry experience. The scheme has set an ambitious goal of providing internship opportunities to one crore young individuals within a span of five years, engaging them with the top 500 companies of the country.

The central objective of this scheme is to create a structured platform where young aspirants can gain hands-on training and experience in a real business environment. The initiative envisions a mutually beneficial arrangement between the intern and the company. While the company provides a meaningful learning space, the interns acquire knowledge, develop professional skills, and strengthen their understanding of industry practices. This practical exposure is aimed at bridging the gap between academic knowledge and the requirements of modern industries, thereby enhancing the overall employability of the youth.

Scope of the Scheme

It is important to note that the Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme is distinct and independent from all existing programmes of skill development, apprenticeship, internships, and student training that are already operational across various States and Union Territories. It functions as a standalone programme and is not linked to any other Central or State government schemes.

Duration of the Internship

The internship under this scheme will be for a period of twelve months. A key condition is that at least half of this duration must be devoted to actual on-the-job training in a real work setting, rather than classroom-based learning. This ensures that the participants spend significant time gaining practical, workplace-related knowledge and skills, which is the core essence of the programme.

Benefits

Real-life Industry Exposure:

Interns will receive 12 months of hands-on experience in India’s leading companies, allowing them to understand workplace practices, develop professional skills, and build career readiness.

Financial Assistance:

Each intern will be supported through a monthly stipend of ₹4,500 provided by the Government of India, along with an additional ₹500 contribution from the industry. This financial aid ensures that interns can sustain themselves during the training period.

One-time Grant for Incidentals:

A lump sum grant of ₹6,000 will be provided to every intern to cover incidental expenses. This amount will be directly credited to the intern’s bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), upon joining the internship location.

Insurance Coverage:

Every intern will receive the benefit of comprehensive insurance protection under two major schemes:

1. Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY)

2. Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY)

This ensures financial security in case of unforeseen circumstances during the internship period.

Duration of Assistance:

The monthly financial support will continue throughout the entire 12-month internship period, ensuring consistent help to interns without interruption.
